Open House

I want to thank all the parents who took the time to come out to the Open House last Wednesday! It was great meeting you all and it's always fantastic to see parents who are really invested in their child's education.

To my students- I think the year has gotten off to a pretty good start and I like the tone that's been set. Some of you are falling into the trap of turning work in late and like I mentioned last week- the grace period ends tomorrow (Monday 30th). I'd like to stress once more that you should ask for help if you need it and not wait until the end of the semester when Finals are approaching, and there is perhaps very little that can be done.

A bit about your new science teacher

Hello everyone!

I want to start off by introducing myself and sharing a bit about my background. My name is Germaine Joseph-Hays and I am the new science teacher for Carrizozo middle school and high school students.

I am originally from the small Caribbean island of St.Lucia and most of my family still lives there. The path that brought me here to New Mexico is a bit of a convoluted one but I will try to keep it short. I left St.Lucia in 2001 to attend the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology & Environmental Science and a Master of Science degree in Biology. While completing my Masters degree, I was employed as a teaching assistant with the Department of Biology and aided in instructing three undergraduate courses. I led field trips, supervised laboratories, assisted with the planning of experiments and examinations, marked reports and mentored students. I was afforded an opportunity to share my love of science with undergraduates and started considering a career as an educator. Also during graduate school, I met and fell in love with an American; we eventually got married and moved to Maine. While in Maine I worked as a scientist at an Environmental laboratory and though I loved New England and will always have fond memories of living out there, being an island girl at heart, I couldn’t face any more 12-foot snow storms! We both felt that the New Mexico would be a great fit for us, and the beauty of the land and warmth of the people have proved us right.

I spent the past year working as a high school science tutor while obtaining my certification to teach middle school and high school science. I’m looking forward to sharing my diverse experiences with my students and fostering a classroom environment of enthusiasm, curiosity and critical thinking.
